Seaside Story
Friday July 30th
On the Friday evening of Regatta week, over 200 people will follow Deal People’s Theatre company’s devised performance, Sea Side Story,
through the streets of the North End. It is a vivid retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story set in Deal during the “Boys strike” of 1938 featuring original music by local guitarist Mike Morgan
The central Idea of “Sea Side Story” is to give the experience of the mining community in Deal a narrative through drama. It is to reach beyond the boundaries of this community and examine the very nature of migration; why people move, what happens to their families when they do, what impact does this have on the host community and how with time and love these issues are resolved one way or another.
Deal People's Theatre company wishes to engage the wider community, young and old, both to tell this story and to see it played on the streets of Deal, in a celebration of the town and the diversity of its people. The company knows, from its previous production, "Ambrose Gwinnet is innocent" how important this activity is, for a town to see a reflection of itself, for the skills gained by the company, the confidence they acquire and the enjoyment and debate they engender.
Performance starts at 7pm outside the Cleary Club, Landmark Centre, High Street Deal.
