Starting on a downbeat note, Winter’s Bone builds inexorably through successive stages of tension to an extraordinary finale, defining its own hillbilly-gangster-realist-noir genre in the process. Jennifer Lawrence is outstanding as Ree, a girl hunting for her missing father in the picturesque Missouri landscape and learning the true meaning of kinship in an isolated community. The director, Debra Granik, balances the pace and intrigue of a beautifully shot mystery thriller with total compassion for her lead. Set in the backwoods of America, Winter's Bone skillfully eschews redneck cliché to create a moving drama of love and fortitude.
