Restrepo
Monday 18th April, 8pm
The shadow of Vietnam is never far away from ‘Restrepo’, an outstanding feat of journalism that follows a company of US soldiers during a gruelling 14-month tour in an especially dangerous Afghan valley. ‘Restrepo’ is an exercise in visceral intimacy, which won the 2010 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Divorced from the vagaries of pre-war justifications and post-combat exit strategies, it allows us to focus on "the human experience" of those who know war as a messy everyday reality. What you come away with, above all, is a sense of the fragile, indelible individuality of the soldiers, whose names, faces and ways of talking are likely to stick in your mind for a long time.
