Natalie Williams

Natalie Williams 3.jpg
Friday 10th February, 7.30pm

We are humbled to welcome one of the UK's hottest singers, Ronnie Scott's resident diva, Natalie Williams to the Astor Theatre. Natalie's repertoire effortlessly moves from sensual soul to sophisticated jazz. Jamie Cullum called her "a truly beautiful star worthy of everyone's attention". Natalie has four critically acclaimed and MOBO nominated albums behind her and her latest, My Oh My contains some of the best contemporary soul to be found in the UK today. Her regular Soul Family nights at Ronnie Scotts have included guest appearances from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Hamish Stuart and Jamie Cullum. Her "Family" at Ronnie Scotts include Shanice Hector, Vula and Brendon Riley from Basement Jaxx, Tiawh and Lucie Silvas. Natalie is truly one of the best female singers of her generation

Georgie_111 copy.jpg
Supporting Natalie is local vocal talent Georgie and her band. Haling from Broadstairs, mother of two young children Georgie has only been singing for three years but has built up a strong following of loyal fans with her own soulful spin on songs. Amazingly, Natalie Williams is a huge inspiration to Georgie and she is a singer not to be missed in her own right, with her eclectic mix of soul, rock and jazz inspired music. Georgie will be accompanied by partner Thalis on keys and Lee on beatbox

Nine Below Zero

nine below zero.jpg

Saturday 18th February, Doors 7.30pm, Show 8pm - Standing

Nine Below Zero is one of British rock & roll’s most enduring and respected R&B combos.

Emerging from the vibrant London Pub and Club scene of the late 1970’s their arrival coincided with the punk explosion, although the band had more in common with the great Chicago blues heroes of the 1950’s than the bondage trousers and pogo dancing.

Tours with The Who, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, Sting and Chuck Berry amongst many others have left their mark, and these eclectic influences are hinted at on several of the tracks heard on their new album It's Never Too Late.

Nine Below Zero gigs are energetic affairs- a non-stop party where band and audience are whipped into a frenzy. It’s sweat soaked, thrill-a-minute stuff.

Deal Festival of Music and the Arts

Friday 24th February - 7:30pm

Dominic Harlan - Pianist & Animateur of 'Love Music - Intimate'
Matthew Sharp - Cellist & Baritone
Participants from 'Love Music - Intimate'
Schumann's Dichterliebe (The Poet's Love)
Brahms' E-minor Sonata for Cello and Piano, Opus. 39
Emily Hall 3 Songs (World Premiere)
Music by the participants of 'Love Music - Intimate'
Schumann's most searing song-cycle, inspired by his love for Clara; Brahms' first cello sonata, fuelled by his admiration for Bach and ardour for Clara; three NEW songs by leading UK composer, Emily Hall, channelling the passion and dynamism of this music and this iconic love triangle; new music by the region's brightest composers and performers, participants in DFMA's pioneering outreach programme, Pyramideal. Prepare for an evening of unforgettable, intimate love music.
The aim of this programme is to take you to the pulsating heart of Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms and the towering relationship that bound their music and their lives together. Schumann was a confessional composer: “ O Clara what bliss it is to write songs” – so wrote Schumann to Clara Wieck , to whom he had become secretly engaged, in 1840 – the year in which his love for her produced the miraculous song cycle, Dichterliebe. The whole closely integrated cycle traces an inner narrative, from the initial awakening of love, through rapture, disillusion and despair to tender regret and a final bittersweet, ironic acceptance. Partnership, the one inspiring the other, was also clearly influencing Brahms’ thinking when writing his E minor Sonata – “ the piano should be a partner - often a leading, often a watchful and considerate partner - but it should under no circumstances assume a purely accompanying role". Schumann’s gorgeous harmonies, inspired by loving partnership, are also the creative seed for these new songs by Emily Hall, one of the UK’s brightest young lights on the composing scene and “A hip young thing” (Roxanna Panufnik).
Dominic Harlan, pianist, composer, presenter, Artistic Director of Glyndebourne’s ‘Opera Experience’ and Garsington’s Opera Education - dubbed the world’s most charismatic communicator on the subject of German Art Song by tenor Ian Bostridge - shares the platform with Matthew Sharp - described by the National Theatre as ‘Rostropovich meets Tom Waits’ - and participants from Deal Festival’s latest pioneering song-writing project, “Love Music”.

Ticket Prices £12.00 – Discount 2 Concerts £22.00, 3 Concerts £30.00

(The other two concerts will be on, March 23 @ Deal Town Hall & April 27 @ St Andrews Church

3 Daft Monkeys

3-daft-monkeys-new-2010.jpg
Thursday 26th April, Doors 7.30pm, Show 8pm - Cabaret Seating

In their own unique DIY style, 3 Daft Monkeys have become one of the most popular touring bands on the UK scene. It is refreshing to hear their quirky, original and unusual approach to music, and their exhilarating and energetic live performances draw huge audiences wherever they play.

The band combine rousing vocals, frenetic fiddling, rhythmical 12-string guitar, dancing bass and foot drum. Whether it’s Celtic, Balkan, Gypsy, Latino, Cornish or other World Music you are drawn to, all these influences and more are in evidence within 3 Daft Monkeys’ music. Far too diverse to be pigeonholed into one genre, and possessing a sound completely impossible to typecast into being a particular “style”, 3DM traverse Dance, Dub, Punk, Reggae and Traditional Folk with ease, creating a stunning blend of upbeat, danceable music which despite all its world influences remains undeniably British.

Expect all this at a live 3DM gig, delivered with an underlying celtic vibe, and a warm, witty and intimate approach to their audiences.

Paul and Art are played to perfection, bringing in elements of their famously fractious relationship, as well as replicating the beautiful harmonies flawlessly. This is a wonderful show filled with excellent music, nostalgia, and a genuine love for some great musicians.

Stevefest

Stevefest.jpg
Sunday 29th April, Doors 2.30pm, Show 3pm-10.30pm - Standing

Stevefest began as a memorial concert staged by the friends and fellow band members of Steve Newman who was killed in a car crash in 2005. Steve was a popular local musician and was the drummer for two local bands; he was studying at Drumtech in North West London when he died.
Stevefest has raised the bulk of the funding for two full scholarships and 1 bursary to Drumtech so far. This is not a registered charity but all the money goes to fund a young musician who may not be able to afford the tuition at Drumtech or the expense of living in London. Three young men so far have benefited from the hard work and dedication of Steve’s friends - a legacy he would have been proud of.
